How to Remove Tree Sap Without Harming the Paint

Did you know that parking underneath a tree could cause some paint issues? Since spring is here, the trees will be blooming again. When they do, there’s something that comes out of these trees that could be your vehicle’s worst nightmare. Tree sap on your vehicle can be a nuisance. Worse yet, it can damage your paint. How do you get rid of it? With help from the iseecars.com website, here’s how to get rid of tree sap without harming your vehicle’s paint. 

To remove the tree sap, you’ll need to have some things handy: a set of soft and non-abrasive microfiber cloths; some isopropyl alcohol or bug and tar remover; warm, soapy car wash and wash mitt; car wax or sealant; and a plastic “razor” blade. When used properly, these items should help remove tree sap without ruining your paint. 

The key to successfully removing tree sap is to act as soon as you see it. Because fresh sap is softer, the sooner that you remove it, the easier this task will be. If you let it sit on your vehicle, it will be harder to remove. 

Start with washing the affected areas with warm water and car wash soap. Put on a wash mitt or grab a soft cloth, then gently scrub the area. This will help clear away the dirt and grime, leaving just the sap. 

Next, dampen a microfiber cloth or a cotton ball with the isopropyl alcohol or tar remover. Gently press it onto the sap for about 30 seconds. This will break down the sap, allowing you to simply wipe it away. If you encounter some tougher spots, you can use acetone, nail polish remover, Goo Gone Automotive, or something more concentrated. While these help to dissolve stubborn residue, always start with the most gentle approach, only using more aggressive measures when completely necessary. 

When you wipe down these areas, do so gently in a circular motion. Continue doing so until the sap is removed from the paint. If you continue to encounter tougher spots, that is where you can bring in a plastic “razor” blade to gently scrape. Never use any metal tools to do this, as doing so will damage the clearcoat that protects the paint job.  

Once the sap is removed, give your vehicle a wash. Dry with a microfiber towel and apply car wax. The wax will further protect your paint and exterior from any future sapling drops.  

You can take your vehicle to an automatic car wash, but please beware of potential damage to your clearcoat and paint. Hire a detailer or find a detail shop that can do a more specialized job to remove the sap. Remember, time is of the essence, and the goal is to catch the sap when it is soft. Regular waxing and detailing makes sap removal easier.  

To avoid tree sap to begin with, do not park under any trees and use a car cover. Protecting the paint and clearcoat of your vehicle – especially an INFINITI – is important. A protected vehicle means greater resale value.
